This study delves into the intricate relationship between elementary math learning and Jean Piaget’s cognitive development stages. Employing an integrative literature review, meta-analysis, and an exploration of implications for mathematics education, we unveil significant insights into the world of mathematical cognition. In the preoperational stage, children exhibit basic mathematical behaviors, yet their grasp of mathematical concepts remains limited. This phase underscores the importance of tailored educational approaches that bridge the perceptual-abstract gap. Play-based and concrete learning experiences prove invaluable in nurturing a foundational numerical sense during this developmental stage. The concrete operational stage emerges as a critical phase for elementary math learning, characterized by substantial growth in mathematical abilities and logical reasoning. This period presents a golden opportunity for educators to engage students in more complex mathematical tasks and cultivate a profound understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts. Although the formal operational stage does not directly correspond to elementary math learning, it serves as the bedrock for advanced mathematical thinking. It empowers students with abstract thinking abilities that find application in complex mathematical theories and problem-solving at higher educational levels. Throughout this journey, our study underscores the paramount importance of aligning instructional methods with children’s cognitive development stages. By recognizing the distinctive attributes and requirements of students at various developmental phases, educators can optimize the math learning experience and nurture mathematical proficiency. This study offers a comprehensive exploration of the interplay between cognitive development and elementary math learning, providing valuable insights for educators and curriculum designers. Understanding how children progress through these cognitive stages is pivotal in fostering mathematical literacy and empowering students to confidently navigate the realm of mathematics.
