Challenges Encountered by Novice Teachers Using Culturally-Responsive Strategies in a Diverse Educational Setting

Abstract

As educational environments become increasingly diverse, the need for culturally responsive teaching has gained prominence. This case study surveys the challenges encountered by novice teachers in employing culturally responsive strategies within a diverse educational setting. Utilizing a single-case study design, the research involved in-depth interviews with three novice university faculty members. Findings reveal that novice teachers prioritize strategies such as building rapport with students, encouraging open communication, and fostering awareness of individual strengths and differences. Despite their efforts, challenges persist, including balancing cultural responsiveness with classroom expectations, sourcing culturally relevant materials, adapting lessons to meet diverse needs, and addressing student biases and stereotypes. These challenges emphasize the necessity for continuous professional development, targeted curriculum development, and effective mentorship to support novice teachers in creating equitable and inclusive learning environments. This study underscores the pivotal role of culturally-responsive strategies in fostering inclusive and effective learning environments for novice teachers.
