Mapping Philippine Research Landscape: Insights from a Bourdieusian Perspective

This systematic review explores Philippine research productivity through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu's sociological framework, shedding light on the complex interplay of cultural, structural, and institutional factors shaping scholarly practices and outcomes. Drawing upon a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, the study identifies key dynamics influencing research productivity, including the unequal distribution of cultural capital, the impact of academic habitus on research practices, the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, and the presence of structural barriers to equity and inclusivity. Findings reveal entrenched disparities in research productivity across institutions and individuals, perpetuating a stratified academic landscape. Moreover, the study highlights the role of interdisciplinary collaboration as a catalyst for innovation and knowledge production, while also acknowledging the challenges associated with disciplinary boundaries and power dynamics. Addressing these challenges requires systemic reforms, including equitable funding allocation, institutional capacity-building, and policies that promote diversity and inclusion. By embracing a Bourdieusian perspective and implementing targeted interventions, Philippine academia can foster a culture of excellence, diversity, and inclusivity, ultimately advancing knowledge production and contributing to societal development.
