Abstract

In this research, the link between participation in extracurricular basketball activities and subjective well-being was analyzed among college students from Guangxi Agricultural Engineering Vocational and Technical College. Altogether, 200 participants responded to the questionnaires assessing frequency of participation in basketball activities and five PERMA well-being dimensions, which included positive emotions, engagement, positive relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. The results indicated moderate to fairly often frequency of basketball participation in the studied sample, whereas personal achievement was shown to be the strongest predictor. The level of overall well-being of the students was rather high, with meaning and accomplishment being rated as very high. According to the results of the Pearson correlation analysis, there was a strong positive correlation between frequency of participation in basketball activities and each of the PERMA dimensions; engagement demonstrated the strongest correlation (r = .744). Each of the dimensions was found to have significantly predicted frequency of participation in extracurricular basketball activities. The conclusions made were that participation in extracurricular basketball was associated with higher levels of well-being through the engagement and meaning dimensions.
