Screen Time Versus Playtime: Correlating Mobile Device Use and Fitness Levels among Grade 11 Students at the University of San Carlos

Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the existence of association between use of mobile devices (screen time) and physical fitness levels of Grade 11 students of University of San Carlos. A quantitative approach of correlational research design was utilized. The data were obtained from 270 participants using a structured questionnaire which included questions related to screen time activities like playing games on the mobile devices, watching movies online, internet browsing, and playtime activities like active play, exercise, and housework activities. Fitness indicators involved in this study included cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body mass index (BMI). For analyzing the collected data, descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation were applied. It was found that screen-based activities took longer time than the physically active playtime for students. Muscular endurance and flexibility showed positive association with screen time while cardiovascular endurance showed no relationship. These research findings indicated that all types of screen usage did not necessarily correlate with poor levels of fitness; nevertheless, high amounts of sedentary screen usage could lead to unhealthy habits. Thus, this study highlighted the need for an effective balance in one’s daily schedule. Using this study as a basis, Mangubat introduced his Balanced Living Program and designed a school-based program encouraging physical activity and good screen practices within the community.
