Capability and Acceptance of Filipino to Adopt Advanced Nursing Practice
Abstract
Advanced Nursing Practice (ANP) is increasingly recognized as a vital strategy to strengthen healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes. In an attempt to bridge the gap in healthcare, the Philippine Legislature had proposed amendment of the Republic Act 9173 known as the Philippine nursing act of 2002 and is currently awaiting executive approval. With its imminent advent, this study aimed to determine the Filipino nurses’ level of capability and their acceptance of its adoption, and also to examine the relationship between these variables. A descriptive-correlational research design was utilized, employing total enumeration sampling with 159 registered nurses in a selected healthcare institution. A survey questionnaire measured the Filipino nurses' capability and its attributes - skills, knowledge, experience, and competencies based on Hamric's framework as well as their degree of acceptance with their awareness, attitude and willingness to adopt Advanced Nursing Practice was used to gather data. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, were used to summarize the data, while a chi-square test of independence, Spearman’s rho, were applied to test the relationship between profiles, capability and acceptance. Findings revealed that Filipino nurses demonstrated very high levels of capability and acceptance towards adoption of ANP. Additionally, a statistically significant correlation was identified between capability and acceptance, suggesting that elevated levels of capability correlate with increased acceptability of ANP adoption. The findings indicate that augmenting nurses' competencies via education, training, mentorship, and skill enhancement may facilitate their acceptance and capability in ANP integration. These results give policymakers, nursing educators, and healthcare administrators useful information that will help them get the nursing workforce ready for possible integration of advanced practice nursing in the Philippines.
