Identifying Human Factors In Maritime Accidents: Basis For Preventive Measures And Strategies

This study explores how crew experience affects human errors leading to maritime accidents, aiming to improve safety. The research examines cognitive, social, and organizational factors that contribute to accidents and whether these factors vary by age, experience, or vessel type. Using a mixed-methods approach, with survey questionnaire and interviews, most common human factors contributing to maritime accident are fatigue, memory lapses, ineffective communication, lack of social support, insufficient training, and complex procedures, alongside the severity of human factors. The study found no significant differences in accident causes based on demographics. However, fatigue, situational awareness, poor communication, and inadequate training were identified as key contributors to accidents across all crews. Furthermore, learning from past mistakes, strategies to leverage experience, influence of experience on decision-making, and effective strategies for maintaining safety and preventing errors are the preventive measures and strategies that could address the maritime accident associated with human factors. The study recommends better rest, training, and communication practices to enhance safety. These findings emphasize the need for consistent safety protocols and ongoing training in the maritime industry. Further research is needed to assess the long-term impact of these preventive measure.
