Abstract

This study examined the influence of political patronage on voters’ behavior and party loyalty in Mati, San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur. Guided by Moustakas’ phenomenological framework, it explored the lived experiences of electors through in-depth interviews, focusing on how socio-economic conditions, cultural obligations, and generational perspectives shape electoral decision-making. The findings revealed that political patronage remains deeply embedded in community life, functioning both as a survival mechanism and a cultural practice. Older generations largely normalized patronage as reciprocity, while younger voters, informed by education and social media, increasingly resisted it as a form of corruption. Moreover, material incentives such as cash, goods, and scholarships were found to decisively influence voting, while socio-cultural factors like utang na loob, kinship ties, and communal expectations reinforced long-term loyalty. However, loyalty was also shown to be conditional and transactional, weakening when material benefits ceased. The study concludes that patronage politics persists as both a structural and cultural phenomenon, but growing resistance among youth offers potential for democratic renewal. These findings imply the need for reforms that strengthen civic education, enhance transparency, and empower voters to move beyond transactional politics toward value-based electoral participation.
