Abstract

This study investigated the lived experience of mothers using the Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) in the breastfeeding program of one of the hospitals in Negros Occidental. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study included nine mothers whose narratives described their emotional, physical, and social experiences of LAM. From their experiences, four overarching themes were identified: “Embracing responsibilities to Nurture bonds,” “Developing Resilience in Breastfeeding,” “Embracing Uncertainties in LAM,” and “Sustaining Maternal Wellness.” The study emphasizes that though LAM is highly valued as a natural, low-cost, and low-tech family planning option, it requires effective education, emotional support, and inclusion in integrated comprehensive maternal healthcare services to be effective.  The research recommends strengthening health education, widening professional and peer support networks, and instituting workplace and healthcare policies favorable to breastfeeding. The research confirms that LAM can be an honorable and empowering postpartum family planning practice for mothers if strong healthcare and education systems are in place to facilitate it.
