Abstract

This exploratory qualitative systematic review investigates the effectiveness of culturally responsive teaching (CRT) in enhancing student engagement and academic performance within the United States educational system. As classrooms become increasingly diverse and sociopolitical challenges persist, this study synthesizes key research to explore how incorporating students' cultural identities, history, and traditions into curriculum and pedagogy can help close achievement gaps and foster inclusive educational spaces. Using qualitative content analysis, the review identifies central themes such as teacher cultural competency, culturally inclusive curriculum design, student empowerment, and social justice-oriented pedagogy. The findings reveal that CRT practices lead to improved student engagement, higher academic performance, and better preparation for students to critically navigate their sociocultural realities. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating students' cultural backgrounds into teaching practices to create equitable learning environments that respect diversity and promote academic success. By supporting teachers' cultural awareness and fostering inclusive teaching strategies, CRT emerges as a powerful tool in promoting educational equity and enhancing learning outcomes in multicultural classrooms. This review underscores the need for continued research and professional development in CRT to ensure all students can thrive in a diverse and dynamic educational landscape.
