Abstract

This systematic review synthesizes the literature on the integration of literacy skills to enhance scientific literacy in science education. Examining diverse studies, the review identifies key themes that contribute to an enriched understanding of this pedagogical approach. Firstly, the positive impact of integrating personal and societal contexts emerges as a consistent finding. The inclusion of real-world issues, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, not only increases student engagement but also highlights the relevance of scientific literacy in addressing pressing challenges. Secondly, the effective integration of media literacy proves essential in addressing misinformation within science education. Educators who incorporate lessons on information reliability, media source evaluation, and critical analysis report better-prepared students, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to navigate the complex landscape of scientific information. Thirdly, the incorporation of historical perspectives acts as a catalyst for deeper understanding. Understanding the historical development of scientific theories and the societal context of discoveries contributes to a richer comprehension of scientific concepts. The imperative of addressing diversity and inclusivity in science education is emphasized. Studies emphasizing inclusivity in curriculum design, representation, and targeted interventions for underrepresented groups report positive outcomes, highlighting the need for culturally relevant and accessible science education. These insights collectively contribute to shaping effective strategies for enhancing scientific literacy through the integration of literacy skills.
