School Heads’ Leadership And Supervisory Skills:Their Relationships to Teachers’ Performance

Abstract

School leadership and supervisory skills play a central role in determining school effectiveness. School leadership is defined as a blend of several tasks mostly related to instructional efforts leading to academic excellence. In these present times, supervision does not only aim to inspect or evaluate teachers’ performance but it moves its direction into a technical process which is aiming for the continuance of teachers’ development. This study aimed to determine the school head’s leadership and supervisory skills and their relationship to teachers’ performance of public elementary schools in the Division of Bacolod City during the School Year 2016-2017. The variables considered were Age, Sex, Length of Service and Highest Educational Attainment. In terms of leadership skills, the areas included were Administrative Skills, Interpersonal Skills, and Conceptual Skills. In terms of Supervisory Skills, the areas considered were Quality Assurance, Technical Assistance and Monitoring and Evaluation. The result of the study showed the following: the level of school heads’ leadership skills in terms of administrative skills, interpersonal skills and conceptual skills were all at very high level. The level of school head’s supervisory skills in terms of quality assurance, technical assistance and monitoring and evaluation were all at very high level. The level of teachers’ performance in all areas was interpreted as very satisfactory. They performed the greatest in the area of teaching-learning process while least in the area of community involvement. The school heads’ leadership skills in the areas of administrative skills and conceptual skills as assessed by teachers were all at very high level in all issues. There was no significant difference in the level of school heads’ leadership skills in the area of administrative skills when they were grouped and compared according to aforementioned variables. There was a significant relationship between the level of school heads’ supervisory skills and level of teachers’ performance and there was a significant relationship between the level of school heads’ supervisory skills and level of teachers’ performance.
