Counseling and therapy provide essential emotional support for both children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their mothers. Counseling sessions create a safe environment for mothers to express their emotions, acquire coping strategies, and build resilience in managing the challenges associated with raising a child with ASD. This study explored the psycho-social challenges faced by parents raising children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using a descriptive phenomenological research design. Utilizing a semi-structured interview guide, one-on-one interviews were conducted with five participants. Data analysis employed Lichtman's 3Cs methodology, capturing thoughts, feelings, and interpretations. The findings revealed four main themes—physical, psychological, economic, and social challenges—each with specific sub-categories. Physical challenges included sleep deprivation, over-fatigue, and parental stress. Psychological challenges encompassed mental preoccupation and acceptance struggles. Economic challenges were marked by a lack of income sources, while social challenges involved stigma, social isolation, and limited support. The study underscores the intense emotional journey of mothers raising children diagnosed with ASD, characterized by love, frustration, and determination. It emphasizes the necessity for enhanced social support networks, inclusive educational practices, and heightened public awareness. This research contributes to understanding the complexities of parenting children with ASD and advocating for compassionate and comprehensive support systems. Consequently, it proposes practical counseling interventions to improve the quality of life for both mothers and their ASD-diagnosed children, promoting a more inclusive and supportive societal framework.
