Abstract

This descriptive study examines the role and limitations of code-switching in reading comprehension among Cebuano-English bilingual pre-schoolers. While code-switching is commonly seen as a helpful strategy that supports comprehension by bridging linguistic gaps, but it also has its potential drawbacks. The findings indicate that an overdependence on code-switching may impede the development of full English proficiency, leading to a fragmented grasp of the language. Another limitation identified in the study was that code-switching did not significantly improve participants' reading skills. These insights emphasize the importance of a balanced approach in bilingual education, where code-switching is used thoughtfully without hindering the acquisition of English as a Second Language.
