Abstract

This integrative review synthesizes empirical and theoretical literature exploring the impact of hands-on learning activities on student engagement and academic achievement in science education. Operating under a constructivist epistemological paradigm, this review adopts an integrative methodology to combine diverse research designs—including experimental, quasi-experimental, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies—published between 2000 and 2026. The systematic search across databases including Google Scholar, ERIC, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science culminated in the selection and analysis of critical literature evaluating how tactile, experiential manipulation of scientific phenomena influences cognitive and affective student outcomes. The findings demonstrate that hands-on learning activities yield a statistically significant positive effect on both student engagement (behavioral, emotional, and cognitive dimensions) and science achievement (conceptual understanding, long-term retention, and higher-order critical thinking). Furthermore, the review identifies critical contextual moderators such as socioeconomic status, teacher pedagogical readiness, resource availability, and the integration of digital/virtual simulations. Systemic challenges, including rigid curricula, high implementation costs, and inadequate professional development, are analyzed. Finally, actionable frameworks for educators and policymakers are provided to align assessment paradigms with experiential outcomes, fostering equitable access to high-quality science education.
