Abstract

This bibliometric study explores the global landscape of research on the mental health and well-being of university students. Using data from Scopus-indexed publications between 2000 and 2024, the study maps key trends, prolific authors, leading journals, institutional contributors, and thematic hotspots. Results reveal a growing body of literature addressing critical issues such as the prevalence of mental health disorders, academic stress, help-seeking behaviors, and the rise of digital mental health interventions. Despite the field’s rapid expansion, findings point to notable gaps, particularly in terms of cultural representation and longitudinal impact assessments. The study emphasizes the importance of incorporating non-Western perspectives, promoting positive mental health—not just the absence of illness—and evaluating the long-term effectiveness of mental health strategies. Universities are identified as vital stakeholders in fostering student well-being through inclusive, evidence-based support systems. This bibliometric analysis provides a valuable foundation for shaping future research directions, informing mental health policy, and guiding educational practices that prioritize student wellness. By addressing both conceptual and geographical gaps, the field can evolve with greater inclusivity, cultural sensitivity, and innovation, ultimately contributing to healthier academic environments and more resilient student populations.
